Poker Ranges Explained

A poker range is the set of hands a player could reasonably hold in a situation. Range thinking replaces the fragile question “What exact hand does my opponent have?” with a more realistic model of possibilities.

Quick answer

Start with all plausible hands, then narrow the range as a player’s position and actions provide information. Do not remove hands simply because one particular outcome would be inconvenient.

Key takeaways

  • Ranges are distributions of possible hands, not a single guess.
  • Position and previous action strongly shape preflop ranges.
  • Board cards remove combinations from possible ranges.
  • Strong decisions compare your hand or range against an opponent’s plausible range.

Why exact-hand guessing fails

Suppose an opponent raises preflop. They might hold a premium pair, strong ace, suited connector or bluff depending on position and tendencies. Assigning exactly ace-king because it “feels right” ignores many combinations consistent with the same action.

Start broad, then update

Build an initial range from position and action. When the flop arrives and the player checks, bets or raises, update the range. Each street adds information, but uncertainty remains.

Combinations matter

Different hand classes have different numbers of combinations. There are six combinations of a specific pocket pair and sixteen combinations of two different ranks before cards are removed: four suited and twelve offsuit. Known cards in your hand and on the board reduce those counts.

Blockers

A blocker is a card you hold that reduces the number of combinations of certain opponent hands. If you hold the ace of a suit, opponents cannot have flush combinations containing that ace. Blockers can matter in both value and bluff decisions.

Range versus range

Advanced strategy considers how entire ranges interact with a board. A flop may favor the preflop raiser because that range contains more very strong hands, or favor the caller because the caller retains more low connected combinations. This concept is more durable than memorizing isolated tricks.

Common mistake: narrowing too quickly

Do not eliminate hands merely because a line looks unusual. Recreational players and strong players alike can take nonstandard actions. Use evidence and frequencies rather than certainty.
