Preflop Poker Strategy Basics

Your preflop decision should combine hand strength with position, stack depth, prior action and the players still involved.

Quick answer

Do not ask only, “Is this hand good?” Ask, “Is this hand good enough for this position, stack depth and action?”

Five inputs to check

  1. Position: how many players act after you?
  2. Stack depth: how many big blinds are effectively in play?
  3. Prior action: has the pot been unopened, raised or reraised?
  4. Hand properties: raw strength, playability and blockers.
  5. Opponent tendencies: who opens, folds, calls or reraises too often?

Opening is different from calling

A hand that can profitably open when action folds to you may not be strong enough to call a raise. Calling must account for the raiser's range and the price you are offered, while opening can also win the blinds immediately.

Stack depth changes hand value

Deep stacks allow more postflop maneuverability. Short stacks increase the importance of immediate equity and fold equity because a larger portion of the effective stack can enter preflop.

Use ranges, not hand labels

The deeper model is a range: a set of hands selected by position, stack depth and action. Starting-hand charts are simply one visual representation of those ranges.

Avoid memorization without context

Charts can be useful reference tools, but they encode assumptions. Learn what changes a range rather than treating one chart as permanent truth.

A repeatable preflop decision sequence

  1. Convert relevant stacks to big blinds and identify the effective stack.
  2. Identify your position and how many players remain to act.
  3. Classify the pot as unopened, opened, reraised or limped.
  4. Estimate the ranges created by that action.
  5. Choose among fold, call, raise or all-in based on the full situation.

This sequence prevents a common error: deciding what to do from the hand name alone. Pocket eights, ace-jack or suited connectors can move between folds, calls, raises and all-ins as stack depth and action change.

What to record when studying preflop hands

Save the blind level, effective stack, positions, raise sizes and tournament stage. If the hand is near a bubble or flat-payout cutoff, note the other stack sizes too. Those details are what allow a later review to distinguish ordinary chip-value strategy from payout-sensitive strategy.
