Push-Fold Poker Basics

Push-fold strategy simplifies some shallow-stack preflop situations into two primary choices: move all-in or fold.

Push-fold is most useful when stacks are shallow enough that a smaller raise would commit a large portion of the stack anyway. It is a framework, not a rule that every short-stack hand must be shoved or folded.

Variables that matter

  • Your stack in big blinds.
  • Your position.
  • How many players remain to act.
  • Antes and blind structure.
  • Opponent calling tendencies.
  • Payout and bubble pressure.
  • Other players' stack sizes.

Why charts require assumptions

A push-fold chart is only as good as the model behind it. A chip-EV chart for one table size is not automatically correct for a final table, satellite-like payout structure or Double Up Sit & Go bubble. Always check what the chart assumes.

Common mistake: ignoring callers

The profitability of an all-in depends partly on what hands opponents will call. If opponents call much wider than expected, some bluffs lose value; if they fold too much, additional shoves can become profitable.

A disciplined push-fold workflow

First confirm that the effective stack is shallow enough for an all-in-or-fold framework to be relevant. Then identify position, players behind, antes, payout pressure and expected calling ranges. Only after those inputs are known should you consult a chart or solver output.

Shove ranges and call ranges are not mirrors

The shover benefits when everyone folds; the caller does not. That difference becomes more important under payout pressure, where a marginal call can risk elimination without the fold-equity component available to the aggressor.

Record the assumptions behind charts

Useful labels include table size, stack depth, ante structure, chip-EV versus ICM model, payout structure and assumed opponent ranges. A chart without those assumptions is difficult to apply safely outside the exact environment in which it was produced.
