Double Up — Poker Definition

Quick answer

Double up: to roughly double your chip stack, usually by winning an all-in pot against an opponent who has enough chips to cover the amount you put at risk.

Why it matters

A double up can dramatically change tournament stack depth. A player with 8 big blinds who doubles may suddenly have around 16 big blinds, creating more strategic options.

Example

You start the hand with 6,000 chips and an opponent has 12,000. All 6,000 of your chips go into the pot, your opponent calls, and you win. Ignoring blinds or other contributions for simplicity, you receive your 6,000 back plus 6,000 from the opponent and finish near 12,000.
